Ferrarese School

The School of Ferrara flourished in the 2nd half of the 15th century in the Duchy of Ferrara. The Duchy was ruled by the Este family, known for its patronage of the arts, which was extended with the ascent of Ercole d'Este I in 1470.

The school comprised a group of painters represented by Cosmè Tura, Francesco del Cossa, Ercole de' Roberti and Lorenzo Costa. Its marked austerity of style derived from the influence of Piero della Francesca and Andrea Mantegna. The school evolved painting styles that appeared to blend influences from Mantua, Venice, Lombardy, Bologna, and Florence.
