Mosaics in Santa Prassede, Rome (9th century)
In Santa Prassede, original 9th-century mosaics are preserved on the triumphal arch, the arch of the apse wall, the half-dome of the apse, and the chapel of San Zeno.
The apse mosaic depicts Christ's Second Coming, with Christ flanked by Sts Peter and Paul, who present Praxedes and Pudentiana to God. Pope Paschal, with the square halo of the living, is featured presenting a model of the church to Christ.
On the triumphal arch the Celestial Jerusalem is depicted. The city of the Elect is shown as a town whose walls are encrusted with precious stones and guarded by angels. The college of Apostles appears in two groups, which approach Christ standing in the centre. The group on the right is led by the Virgin and St John the Baptist, and that on the left by the eponymous saint, Praxedes.
The interior of the small chapel of St Zeno is entirely covered with mosaics in glowing colours, which extends to the front of the entrance. Inside, there are mosaics on the ceiling, and on the lunettes on the walls.
