In 1554, Georg Knight of Ilsung, a wealthy merchant from Augsburg, acquired Tratzberg Castle, built around 1500 in late Gothic style, expanded and changed it according to the spirit of the Renaissance age. Proof of those changes are the splendidly painted courtyard and exquisite Renaissance parlours. The Renaissance interiors of the castle have the best-preserved room furnishings of the pre-1600 period: the Königinnenzimmer (1568-69), with a coffered ceiling, wall paneling and biblical texts in inlay work running round the cornice, is attributed to Hans Waldner (died 1573). | |
