Biography

Flemish landscape painter. Born in Brussels; with his family he moved via Antwerp to Amsterdam, settling in Delft in 1602 or earlier when he became an innkeeper at De Verloren Zoon (the Prodigal Son) on Voldersgracht number 12.

He worked in Amsterdam from 1607-1620. In 1619 he was one of the experts who had to value a consignment of 'Caravaggist paintings'. Upon his fathers' death in 1620 he returned to Delft; and bought a house on the south side of the Vlamingstraat canal. In 1650 he exchanged this house valued at 900 guilders with for another on Vlamingstraat belonging to ebony worker Anthonij van der Wiel, Vermeer's brother-in-law.

He entered the Guild in 1623-24, and became headman in 1635 and 1638.
