MASTER of the Albertini
(active 1310s in Siena)

Biography

Italian painter, also known as Master of the Casole Fresco. This anonymous Sienese painter takes his name from a detached fresco of the Virgin and Child Enthroned from the Albertini Chapel in Casole d'Elsa, near Siena, now in the museum of the Collegiata there.

The core group of four paintings by the Master of the Albertini consists of the Virgin and Child with Six Angels (National Gallery, London), the Casole fresco and two panel paintings in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Siena: the Virgin and Child Enthroned, no. 18, and the Virgin and Child, no. 592.

The painter has often been discussed as transitional between Duccio, the Master of Città di Castello and Pietro Lorenzetti.
