The Triumph of St Thomas Aquinas (detail)

1366-67
Fresco
Cappellone degli Spagnoli, Santa Maria Novella, Florence

In the lower register of the fresco a uniform row of fourteen thrones extends like a line of choir stalls across the wall. The detail shows part of the left side thrones with female figures whose identification is difficult. They were originally identified by inscriptions which today are lost. According to Vasari they represent the seven theological sciences, but there are other assumptions, too.
