Former Cistercian Abbey Church, Sankt Urban

Franz Beer's masterpiece is the former Cistercian Abbey Church of St Urban, near Langenthal in Switzerland. It is a Wandpfeiler (wall-pier) type building with double pilasters on the wall-piers, and setback galleries.

The Cistercian Abbey was founded in 1194 and expanded in the 13th century. In 1711, Abbot Malachy Glutz had the Vorarlberg architect Franz Beer rebuild the church and convent buildings in the Baroque style.

The picture shows the west façade of the church.
