Benson was a Lombard painter who settled in Bruges in 1519 and painted in a Flemish style particularly reflecting the influence of Gerard David. There are many of his pictures in Spain and he was formerly known as the "Master of Segovia".

On this painting the Virgin is accompanied by Saint Barbara and Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Formerly the painting was attributed to Gerard David .
