Berckheyde's earliest views of Amsterdam date from the mid-1660s, the majority of these depicting the Dam with the Town Hall, the Nieuwe Kerk and the Waag, such as the present picture. This is his last dated view of the Dam, painted just one year before he died in 1698. Similar depictions of the Dam by Berckheyde, both dating from the 1660s, are in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden and in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp.
