BERNINI, Gian Lorenzo
(b. 1598, Napoli, d. 1680, Roma)

Loggia of the Founders

1647-52
Marble
Cappella Cornaro, Santa Maria della Vittoria, Rome

Bernini placed the bust-length figures of the living and dead members of the Cornaro family in what are sometimes mistakenly called theatre box. Such boxes came later, Bernini's are better likened to the oratories from which distinguished or royal personages observed services.

The loggia is located on the right side wall of the chapel.
