BRIL, Paul
(b. 1554, Antwerpen, d. 1626, Roma)

Landscape with Nymphs and Satyrs

1623
Oil on canvas, 71 x 103 cm
Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin, Ohio

The painting provides a good example of the final phase of Bril's activity. In the easel paintings of this period, Paul Bril's compositions broaden and become more tranquil as he begins to include literary themes and mythological characters. The lowered foreground, usually used to accommodate the main scene, is here reserved for nymphs and satyrs.
