CARRACCI, Agostino
(b. 1557, Bologna, d. 1602, Bologna)

The Holy Family with Sts Anthony Abbot, Catherine and the Infant St John

1582
Copper engraving, 488 x 316 mm
Museo Correr, Venice

This engraving was made after Paolo Veronese's Pala Giustinian.

The Bolognese painter and engraver Agostino Carracci visited Venice in 1582 and 1587. Like his brother Annibale, he had a very high regard for the paintings of Veronese. Following several altar paintings and devotional pictures in Venice and Padua, he made engravings that on closer inspection turn out to be critical copies. In the case of the engraving made from the Veronese's Pala Giustinian, he made a minor correction to the actual format of the picture and other changes to the pictorial architecture. He also omitted the open book at the Madonna's feet. Particularly noticeable is the attempt to relate the figures to each other more strongly, altering the directions in which Sts Joseph and Anthony Abbot look, to attain a closed pictorial effect.
