The dwarf, Angiola Biondi, was in the service of Princess Violante of Bavaria, wife of Prince Ferdinando de' Medici for whom the picture was painted. Angiola is portrayed as a shepherdess in an Arcadian landscape. Cassana was the preferred portraitist at the Medici court. The animals were probably painted by his brother, Giovanni Agostino who specialised in the genre.
