Trees in the Jas de Bouffan

1875-76
Oil on canvas, 54 x 73 cm
Private collection

The Jas de Bouffan (House of the Wind), the former summer residence of the Governor of Provence, to the west of Aix, was bought by Cézanne's father in 1859. Its grounds, with their avenue of chestnut trees and stone pool, were the subject of many of Cézanne's paintings.

In the present painting the motif itself is unspectacular, but Cézanne has made intensive but carefully controlled use of colour to create a sundrenched park landscape.
