Still-Life with Apples and a Pot of Primroses

c. 1890
Oil on canvas, 73 x 92 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

The pattern of leaves against the background is unusual in Cézanne's work, as is the highly finished surface. With the exception of the primroses, the objects in the picture appear frequently in the artist's still-lifes: the scalloped table, the cloth pinched up is sculptural folds, and the apples nested in isolated groups.

This canvas was owned by Claude Monet.
