The transformation and resolution of objects into areas of colour is a feature of Cézanne's later works. This view of painting no longer requires dramatic motifs: a randomly chosen detail of landscape containing tree trunks, foliage and block-shaped rocks suited Cézanne's distinctive ideas of pure painting just as well as the Château Noir or Mont Sainte-Victoire.
