CÉZANNE, Paul

Mont Sainte-Victoire Seen from Les Lauves

1904-06
Oil on canvas, 74 x 82 cm
Kunstmuseum, Basel

Although spots of paint are still used to represent areas of foliage or building, the Sainte-Victoire paintings from the latter part of Cézanne's life are increasingly abstract. The sky seems to merge with the foreground, particularly on the left-hand side; the three-dimensionality of landscape before Cézanne seems to have disappeared.
