Mont Sainte-Victoire

1902-06
Oil on canvas, 65 x 81 cm
Museum of Art, Philadelphia

Mont Sainte-Victoire became a fetish for Cézanne, a sort of alter ego; he often spoke of the mountain as a person. His alter ego in the history of painting was Poussin, whose Arcadian Shepherds features the same peak hung (in reproduction) at the head of his deathbed.
