CÉZANNE, Paul
(b. 1839, Aix-en-Provence, d. 1906, Aix-en-Provence)

Bathers

1900-06
Watercolour and pencil, 130 x 210 mm
Private collection

Cézanne painted numerous watercolours on the theme of Bathers. The present picture shows a sheet from a sketch album. The layout of the landscape and the groups of figures bear similarities to the version of the Large Bathers in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Cézanne believed that the bathers should become a part of the overall structure of the picture, echoing the rhythm of the trees, the sky and the water.
