Entombment

1494-98
Stone with touches of paint
Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Pierre, Solesmes

This Entombment fills the entire south transept wall of the church. The architectural frame, a hybrid of Gothic and Italianate classicizing forms, provides an imposing stage. In the upper half, an angel embraces the empty cross, four others bear the instruments of the Passion, and the two thieves hang crucified. Three-quarter-length figures of King David and Isaiah hold banderoles with their prophecies. A shallow burial chamber, guarded by Roman soldiers, is embedded in the wall below to include the Entombment scene.
