DEGAS, Edgar
(b. 1834, Paris, d. 1917, Paris)

Woman Putting on a Stocking

1895-1910
Bronze, height 43 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Degas's surviving sculptures depict favourite subjects: horses, dancers, and women - bathing or dressing - all caught in a fleeting moment.

The missing left foot of the present work either broke off from the wax model or perhaps never existed at all.
