DONATELLO
(b. ca. 1386, Firenze, d. 1466, Firenze)

Herod's Banquet

1427
Bronze, 60 x 60 cm
Baptistery, Siena

In 1425 Donatello had already begun the Herod's Banquet for the Baptismal Font in the Cathedral of Siena, for which, as early as 1417, two reliefs, one of the Baptism of Christ and the other of the Arrest of St John, had been ordered from Ghiberti.

In its style this relief represented a further development of the motifs expressed in that of St George and the Princess, and foreshadowed the bronze bas-reliefs on the High Altar of the Church of St Anthony in Padua. He executed between 1427 and 1429 for the corner of the Font two small statues, Faith and Hope, too.
