In the Hôtel Séguier Simon Vouet painted the chapel (1636—38), the library (finished by 1640), and the lower gallery, which was left incomplete at his death in 1649. In the first two of these Vouet introduced methods of decoration which were up till then unknown in France.
He decorated the chapel ceiling with a fresco of consistent illusionism. The subject was the Adoration of the Magi, and Vouet disposed the procession of the Kings and their attendants in a sort of frieze round the cove of the vaulting, so that the figures seem to stand on the cornice. Michel Dorigny was a collaborator of Simon Vouet and the best engraver of his works. This engraving represents a detail of the ceiling decoration by Vouet.
