The antique torso was formerly in the Palazzo Rondanini, Rome. It was restored (completed) by François Duquesnoy. Restorations of Classical sculpture in the 17th century were not free of Baroque amplification. Duquesnoy's completion of Classical statuary was hailed by his contemporaries as 'absolutely perfect', but his famous Rondanini Faun is rejected as a Classical composition by modern archeologists because its broad movement and open gesture were based upon the aesthetic preconceptions of Baroque art.
