FERRARI, Gaudenzio
(b. ca. 1475, Valduggia, d. 1546, Milano)

Lamentation of Christ

1527-29
Oil on panel, 118 x 92 cm
Szépművészeti Múzeum, Budapest

In this painting Gaudenzio Ferrari allows free flow to emotion, composes with spontaneous freshness and in the way in which he combines russet-red, bright red and ochre, producing a mixture of harsh flavours on his palette. However, the composition with all its fire and temperamental revelation of emotions is a harmonious composition keeping the details in complete balance.
