This masterpiece of the Florentine manuscripts was made for the outstanding figure of the Florentine Renaissance, Lorenzo de' Medici. The miniaturist was Francesco di Antonio del Chierico.
Together with Attavante degli Attavanti and the brothers Gherardo and Monte di Giovanni, Chierico was one of the most significant miniaturists in Florence in the second half of the 15th century when miniature art was at its peak. He was a follower of Fra Angelico and was influenced by other fresco painters like Domenico Veneziano and Alessio Baldovinetti. His speciality was the illustration of the works of humanists, his main works are the illustrations of a Petrarch and a Dante manuscript, as well as the Prayer Book of Lorenzo de' Medici.
The picture shows a page (folio 13v) from the Prayer Book of Lorenzo de' Medic. In the middle of the page the scene of the Annunciation is depicted. The composition and the realization of the miniature can be compared with the works of the mature Renaissance. Below it a Nativity scene can be found. In the small medallions of the frame prophets and sibyls are represented.
