Vault of the east bay

c. 1330
Fresco
Cappella Baroncelli, Santa Croce, Florence

The vault of the front section (east bay) of the room contains depictions of the cardinal virtues as half-length figures in octofoil frames: Iustitia in the east vault cell, Prudentia in the south, Temperantia in the north, and Fortitude in the west. Fortitudo is given the attributes of a shield, a club, and a lion's pelt; Iustitia, distinguished from the others by a octofoil nimbus, holds a rod scale and a sword; Temperantia has a sickle; Janus-faced Prudentia holds an astrolabe.
