In the first half of the 19th century in Germany, some of the architects and their clients relied on forms of historical buildings that were reckoned worthy of the high status of church architecture by virtue of their age and their history. For his church of St. Ludwig (Ludwigskirche) in the prestigious Ludwigstrasse in Munich, Gärtner turned to 14th-century Lombard church architecture for models.
