Giovanni di Balduccio must have made a marble polyptych in Bologna around 1331 for the church in Rocca near the Porta di Galliera. Five reliefs and statues have survived from this, the present statue is one of them. Other pieces are in Museo Civico Medievale, Bologna; Pinacoteca Comunale, Faenza; Musée Grobet-Labadié, Marseille; and J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
