This panel formed he left wing of a diptych, the right wing being in the collection of the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica in Rome. The left panel consists of the following scenes: The Apotheosis of Augustine; The Coronation of the Virgin; Catherine Disputing with the Philosophers; Francis Receiving the Stigmata; and John the Baptist in the Wilderness. The scenes on the right panel shows six episodes from the life of Christ: The Nativity, Christ on the Cross, The Lamentation, Christ in Limbo, The Three Women at the Tomb, and Christ the Judge.
Placed side by side, the two identically-sized panels illustrate in a refined palette and with the care of a miniaturist some of the most popular and emotionally charged biblical and apocryphal scenes which presumably resonated most strongly with the Medieval believer.
This diptych is considered to be an important bridge between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
