The picture shows the central scene on the ceiling: Allegory of the Medici-della Rovere Marriage. It was decided to decorate the rooms on the ground floor to mark the marriage of the young Ferdinando de' Medici, which formally took place in August 1634 but was not celebrated and consummated until 1637, owing to the youth of his bride, Vittoria della Rovere, who was raised at the Florentine court. The depictions on the ceiling of the large Salone, which links the suites of the grand duke and his consort and served as antechamber to court ceremony, are particularly related to that wedding, though the painting of the room was not yet completed by the time it was celebrated in July 1637.
