GOGH, Vincent van
(b. 1853, Groot Zundert, d. 1890, Auvers-sur-Oise)

Portrait of Père Tanguy (detail)

Autumn 1887, Paris
Oil on canvas
Musée Rodin, Paris

The Japanese influence, already present in Whistler and Manet and drawn upon by Monet in the 1880s for its compositional boldness, was absorbed in a blatant fashion van Gogh and Gauguin. Examples are the wall covered in ukiyo-e prints against which van Gogh posed Père Tanguy and the circular shape that Gauguin introduced into La Belle Angèle, which can be found in the work of Hokusai and Hiroshige.
