After mutilating himself by with a knife, van Gogh was hospitalised. Weeks of detention here led to the choice of the subjects of two paintings, The Courtyard of the Hospital at Arles (F 519) and the Ward in the Hospital in Arles (F 646). These paintings express the trials and sorrows of isolation.
