Catalogue numbers: F 641, JH 1795. Van Gogh often painted this view from his hospital window at Saint-Rémy. Even when they are merely a background, the mountains can be menacing. This painting shows the mountains so close that our fear of confinement is automatically redoubled. The stone wall and the rocky crags complement each other; the mountainside makes it impossible for us to see the blue sky and eliminates the sense of horizon. |
