Sorrow

November 1882, The Hague
Lithograph, 389 x 292 mm
Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

Catalogue numbers: F 1655, JH 295.

This lithograph is based on a drawing which exists in several versions. To the drawing representing a woman in a desolate landscape van Gogh added a few scraggy branches in blossom and some flowers appear to allude to hope. Several months later, when he made the lithograph, van Gogh evidently realised that this embellishment was unnecessary, and he used a simple version of Sorrow, with its almost featureless setting.

There are three known impression of the print.
