Virgin of Humility1520-25Pen and brown ink, 218 x 198 mm Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, Munich | |
Known as the Madonna of Humility, this type of composition is of Italian origin. Gossart's direct source of inspiration cannot be identify with certainty, it could be a relief by Donatello, or Mantegna's engraving which share some characteristics with Gossart's drawing. The composition of the drawing is certainly by Gossart, however, some critics prefer to describe it as a copy after a lost original. |
