GOSSART, Jan
(b. ca. 1478, Maubeuge, d. 1532, Middelburg)

Virgin of Humility

1520-25
Pen and brown ink, 218 x 198 mm
Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, Munich

Known as the Madonna of Humility, this type of composition is of Italian origin. Gossart's direct source of inspiration cannot be identify with certainty, it could be a relief by Donatello, or Mantegna's engraving which share some characteristics with Gossart's drawing.

The composition of the drawing is certainly by Gossart, however, some critics prefer to describe it as a copy after a lost original.
