The Lamentation

1520s
Pen and brown ink, brush and brown ink, brown wash, black chalk, 277 x 305 mm
Staatliche Museen, Berlin

The subject of the Lamentation enjoyed a strong visual tradition in Northern art, one that Gossart certainly drew upon. He based his composition on Dürer's Lamentation from the so-called Small Passion, a series of thirty-seven woodcuts.

On the verso of the sheet a sketch of the Dead Christ was recently uncovered.
