The subject of the Lamentation enjoyed a strong visual tradition in Northern art, one that Gossart certainly drew upon. He based his composition on Dürer's Lamentation from the so-called Small Passion, a series of thirty-seven woodcuts. On the verso of the sheet a sketch of the Dead Christ was recently uncovered. |
