HOLBEIN, Hans the Younger
(b. 1497, Augsburg, d. 1543, London)

Portrait of a Young Woman

1540-45
Oil and gold on oak panel, 28 x 23 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

This painting, formerly attributed to Hans Holbein the Younger himself, is probably a workshop copy of a lost original by Hans Holbein the Younger.

Given her lavish costume, the sitter must have been of the highest levels of society, although her exact identity remains elusive.
