Sir Richard Rich

1535-40
Black and coloured chalks and pen and ink on pale pink prepared paper, 321 x 264 mm
Royal Collection, Windsor

Sir Richard Rich (c. 1496-1567) ascended to the nobility as the first Baron Rich in 1548, and became lord chancellor in the same year. In 1535 he married Elizabeth Jenks, daughter of a well-to-do London spice merchant. Holbein made preparatory drawings on paper for pendant portraits of the couple. The corresponding paintings presumably once existed, although none of Sir Richard has survived, and the two remaining of Lady Rich are workshop copies.
