This small, brilliantly illustrated book of hours was commissioned by King Philip VI of Valois (reigned 1328-1350) and his consort Blanche de Navarre for Jeanne de Navarre (1311-1349), the daughter of King Louis X of France. It contains prayers and devotional texts in Latin for the private use and edification of the laity. The miniatures were painted by Jean Le Noir and other illuminators from the workshop of Pucelle.
Apart from a calendar, this book contains a cycle of miniatures illustrating four offices devoted to the Trinity, the Virgin Mary, Saint Louis and the Passion.
The miniature on folio 85v shows Blanche de Navarre (left) and, at her feet, the young prince who - guided by a teacher with a rod in his hand - is learning to read and write from a copy of the Bible.
