St Luke

1403-06
Marble
Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence

Between 1403 and 1406 Lamberti carved the figure of St Luke for the notaries' guild at Orsanmichele and also designed the niche that housed the statue. The figure conforms to the late Florentine Gothic style.

The statue depicting St Luke was intended to decorate the niche of the corporation in the main façade of the church of Orsanmichele (on the side of via Calzaioli), where it remained until the 17th century, when it was replaced by a bronze one, the work of Giambologna. The marble statue is now in the Bargello, while the niche and the reliefs of the pediment are still in situ.
