Kolm Saigurn in the Rauris Valley with the Sonnblick

1835
Oil on canvas, 73 x 58 cm
Residenzgalerie, Salzburg

In his imposing depiction of the Sonnblick mountain, including a rushing waterfall and Kolm Saigurn, Loos convincingly demonstrates the elementary nature of high-Alpine areas and the natural forces active within them. Loos' manner shows him to be a pioneer of realistic landscape painting. However, traditional Baroque foreground scenery with romanticising staffage figures leads into the heroically idealised expansive pictorial composition.
