LÓPEZ Y PORTAÑA, Vicente
(b. 1772, Valencia, d. 1850, Madrid)

Portrait of Doña Francisca de la Gándara

1846
Oil on canvas, 128 x 98 cm
Museo del Prado, Madrid

López y Portaña produced an extensive gallery of portraits of personages from the court of Ferdinand VII. These are of impeccable outline and sure technique but are far removed from the life with which Goya, his contemporary, using essential brushstrokes, managed to infuse into them. These rigidly academic portraits reflect the characteristically Neoclassical mastery of drawing.

Doña Francisca de la Gándara was the Mexican Vicereine.
