Madonna and Child with St Francis and St John the Baptist

This triptych is set above the altar in the south arm of the western transept. The two saint flanking the Madonna and Child allude by hand gestures to the presence of Cardinal Napoleone Orsini, destined to be buried in the niche underneath. The Baptist holds a scroll with a Latin inscription: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness. Make straight the way of the Lord.
