The picture shown is a detail of a polyptych. The treatment of the pattern of the vestment and robe of the Madonna is remarkable. The foreshortening of the motifs - notably down the left side - suggests the third dimension. It was Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti who fully exploited this method.
