LORENZO DI ALESSANDRO DA SANSEVERINO
(documented 1468-1503 in Sanseverino Marche)

Pietà

c. 1491
Tempera on wood, 62 x 158 cm
Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

Lorenzo di Alessandro da Sanseverino, a painter from the cirle of Girolamo da Camerino, is certainly one of the leading exponents of the art of the Marches, a region whose art we are familiar with in a rather summary way and whose artists have lacked adequate critical appraisal.

This Pietà is a lucid work, but one in which the tension characterizing much of Lorenzo's art is barely able to emerge, frozen as it is by an excessive, rather over-sweet sentimentalism and the intensely contorted line.
