LORENZO VENEZIANO
(active 1356-1372 in Venice)

Madonna of Humility with Sts Mark and John the Baptist (detail)

1366-70
Egg tempera on wood
National Gallery, London

The detail shows the Madonna and Child. It is noteworthy that the overwhelming majority of Sienese versions of the Madonna of Humility show the Child on the right, generally suckling the Virgin's left breast, while north Italian painters show the Child on the left.
