LOTTO, Lorenzo

St Jerome

1544
Oil on canvas, 53 x 42 cm
Galleria Doria Pamphilj, Rome

This St Jerome constitutes one of four versions of the subject painted by Lotto during or directly after his second period in Treviso (1542-45). A comparison with the version painted in the same city nearly forty years earlier illustrates both the extent of Lotto's stylistic development over the intervening period, and the essential continuity of his approach to a subject that was highly congenial to his artistic and religious temperament.
