In the case of the independent public theatre, liberated from the court context, Neoclassical styles were used. The Grand Théâtre in Bordeaux was considered by contemporaries to be the loveliest theater in the world. Its exterior, built between 1777 and 1780, with the broad sweep of the pillared front of house and its continuous entablature is charming; the magnificent staircase of the interior was the model for the Paris Opéra.
