LUTMA, Johannes the Elder (b. 1587, Emden, 1669, Amsterdam) |
Two salts1639Silver, parcel-gilt, height 24,2 cm Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam | |
These salts are from a series of four, the other two being in the Historisch Museum, Amsterdam. The triangular foot, which is entirely covered with auricular decoration, and the stem in the form of a human body, were both devised by Adam van Vianen, but despite this influence Lutma's salts have a very different look. Lutma must have regarded these salts as a high point in his oeuvre, for he had a very similar one included in his portrait which was painted by Jacob Backer, a pupil of Rembrandt. |
